Slavic 248: Seminar: The Soviet Twenties

Tu 2-5, Dwinelle 6115. Instructor: Anne Nesbet.

Units: 4

In this seminar we will be exploring the cultural landscape (with particular attention paid to literary works and films) of the Soviet 1920s.  A period of great change, turmoil, and creativity, the decade of the 1920s continues to challenge its readers, viewers, analysts, and interpreters.  In this class we will engage closely with some of the canonical texts of the 1920s, but we will also examine the way canons are created (and ongoing controversies surrounding those canons).  Our goal will be to find corners of the 1920s which will generate interesting, original work by our seminar participants.

Prerequisite: Graduate standing or consent of instructor.
